One Month of Movies

I made a decision as to what plan to have for Netflix. If it were completely up to me, I would cancel the whole thing. I'm very disgusted with them for a bunch of reasons, however my hubby has found his niche - horror movies (instant play). Therefore I decided just to do the streaming so he can watch his movies. You have to wait a month anyway to see the new releases so I'll probably do pay-per-view for the few movies I watch anymore. So, until Sept. 2, I'm going to get my money's worth out of Netflix. It was difficult but I filled my queue with movies and intend to watch and send as many as I can this month.
By the way, in case you're wondering what's gotten into me with all the blogs - I have a goal which is to get 200 blogs before my retirement anniversary date which is Sat. It was supposed to be when I started the blog but that didn't materialize. I'm almost there!!

Hunka-Hunka Music

We saw an Elvis impersonator at the Clearfield Co. Fair on Saturday and though I don't consider myself an all-out Elvis fan, I seem to gravitate to his music. I've seen some really good shows in Vegas that I thoroughly enjoyed and until this weekend I wondered why. I think it's in every young girl's life to find a movie during those middle school years that you want to see over and over again and makes an impact on you to last a lifetime. For me I think it was Elvis' movies Love Me Tender and Blue Hawaii. We didn't see many movies back then but these were the first ones I remember seeing at the theater. I also remember what my daughter's wanted to see at that age - Lesley and her friends were into Top Gun and Allison and all her friends saw Titanic over and over. I also remember all the Disney movies coming out when Allison was young and how we looked forward to the next one. I really miss going to the movies but I have the next best thing now - plays at the Reitz Theater in DuBois. My hubby stopped going to the movies a long time ago but he enjoys the plays so I take him up on it every chance I get. Next weekend we'll see The Great American Trailer Park Musical! That should be pretty interesting if nothing else but I just found out today that his cousin has the lead male role. I'm sure they'll do a great job.

Bob's Power Walk

Here's another exercise DVD review. I have to be honest about this - I did not actually do the DVD but I watched it as I always do with them. I can pretty much tell if it's something I will be able to do or if it fits into my routine. So this was the one from Biggest Loser and Tara, who I loved and wanted to win, helps to teach. Tara, as you might recall, won so many of the challenges even over the men. I knew in advance that they were doing 16 minute miles which is slow compared to the Leslie Sansone Walk Slim program but I thought I'd give it a shot through Netflix. It was tough to watch for several reasons.
  1. When Bob was doing the routine, he did one or two reps and then walked around. I know Jillian will do this with some of her programs and I want the instructor to do it with me. I realize that it takes much more effort to talk while you're doing it but others do it and that's what I want to see. They're professionals and they should be able to do it and maybe get a little sweaty.
  2. There were a couple miles where just the contestants did the routine and that was difficult to watch. They were clumsy, not as prepared as I thought they should have been and just very awkward. Believe me I sympathize with them but when you're asking people to pay for this, it should be a higher quality.
  3. Lastly, they did the unspeakable in my book - mix cardio and weights. I keep my weights and any strength building exercises to a separate day so this doesn't work for me. I do have several programs that include the weights during the routine but I either don't use the weights or use that as a strength exercise only.

So, that's my review and I already sent the DVD back, along with Eat,Pray,Love which I wasn't that impressed with either and how much more of a strong, female lead can I get!

Strong Female Leads

I like alot of different kinds of movies and I'd be hard pressed to pin it down to any certain type of movie that appeals to me but Netflix doesn't seem to find it difficult at all. They have recommended movies to me based on my interest in movies with a strong female lead. Hmmm, you know I think they may have something there. I never really thought about it that way but I do tend to gravitate in that direction. I know there are certain actors that I shy away from, probably based on other movies they've made that I didn't like, but there seem to be few actresses (Ok, I can name a few) that I don't like. Of course, when I do like a movie with one of those actors, such as George Clooney in Up in the Air, it takes me by surprise. I just watched The Kids are Alright, which fits into their profile of me and the last movie was a drama with Juliana Moore. Now, my question is whether they can tell my husband is watching instant play movies on the computer and if they know we are 2 separate people with completely opposing interests. I'm still getting the "based on your interest in Zombieland and Dead or Unalive" comments along with the suggestions for movies with a strong female role. They'll really hit the jackpot if they recommend a horror film with a strong female lead! I'll have to tell my husband to let me know when one shows up.

A Christmas Story

Yesterday we made a trip to Cleveland and visited the Christmas Story house in Tremont. The younger brother, Randy, was there to sign autographs. I had been to the gift shop before and it brings back many memories of the movie. Randy, if you remember, was the one who put on the snowsuit and when he fell couldn't get up. We missed the actual tour of the house since Randy was there but that was something my daughter could probably due on her own (she's been through it before and is very knowledgeable). It was fun to see different things from the movie such as a coat pole with hats on (especially the pink bunny ears), the half unwrapped BB gun in the corner, the notebook in the bathroom that had the words from the decoder ring, and of course the leg lamp at the living room window. It makes me want to watch the movie again. By the way, someone actually bought one of the leg lamps while we were waiting in line. It was really cold yesterday and the line was very long. I think the best time to go would be Christmas in July.

Up in the Air

I've had this movie for over 3 weeks now and just yesterday watched it. At first I didn't even remember where I put it - I was right in the middle of cleaning and I tucked it in the entertainment center. Admittedly I have been busy and I never wanted to spend my day in front of the TV, whether it be movies, soaps, news, weather or QVC, but after 3 weeks I started to re-evaluate my membership to Netflix. I almost got on and canceled it but thought I better get that movie ready to send back first. I didn't even think I'd like it. As much as I hate to say it, I haven't been that impressed with George Clooney lately. But yesterday while my tomatoes were cooking down into sauce, I decided to watch it and get it over with. Man, I loved it! I found myself experiencing so many emotions during a short time and having a bunch of aha moments. I think it was alot better than Crazy Hearts - that one was too predictable in a bad way. Now I'm in the process of rethinking my decision to cancel Netflix. I still don't like how they sold us out for the on demand channels but it is convenient and really don't want to have to go out of my way to the Redbox. Well, there is another option which satisfies my new frugal spirit and my love of movies - change my plan.
